FROM THE DEVOTIONAL "PEPPER 'N SALT," BY: VANCE HAVNER
Quote of the Day

A well-known politician used to say, "If you want to get along, go along." This is the day of go-alongism. The free world is trying to go along with Communism. We call it "peaceful coexistence." Faith is trying to go along with unbelief. The church is trying to go along with the world. The new nature tries to go along with the old. But Christians cannot go along with each other. The one place where go-alongism should succeed is where it fails.

Devotion of the Day

FRIENDS OF GOD

And he was called the friend of God.
James 2:23

Of all the preachers and teachers and religious folk of our day, how few impress us that they know God! Able and successful, earnest and aggressive, we find in them much that is good. But can we not count on our fingers those who have gone far into the deeper things of the Spirit, who have learned those precious secrets of intimacy with God? To how few could we go in an hour of deepest trouble, to how few dare we tell our inmost problems!

This age of Phenobarbital and psychoses does not lend itself to a closer walk with God. The price is great nowadays, and he who chooses to be God's friend may be overlooked in the worship of celebrities. But in our better and needier moments we turn from heroes to seek some lowly soul who has learned those rare lessons of the school of Enoch who walked with God. Our efficient American Christianity is too busy putting things over to be interested in the quiet, slow saints who take time to be holy instead of just singing about it.

Give us more friends of God!

AMEN & AMEN!!!

One of my greatest desires is for God to bring me into the company of spiritual giants.  Men of Integrity.  Men who demonstrate the faith.  Men who are CRAZY in love with Jesus Christ.  Men who fear God so much they will do whatever He asks them IMMEDIATELY.  True Shepherds who not only  talk about honoring God they also live a life pleasing to the Lord.  This is the kind of mentor I am asking the Lord to bring into my life.

GOOD NEWS INDEED!!!

I believe in the GRACE of God.  We OBEY God out of our love and admonition for HIM but we are saved by GRACE.  The Bible Says in Ephesians 2:8-9 that, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast."

The Bible states in Romans 3:20 that "no one will be declared righteous in His sight by observing the law."  In other words, there is no amount of obedience to God which will cause me to become Right with God.  God's standard of perfection is far to great for me to attain out of my own abilities.  The Bible says all have sinned and fall short of His glory.  But there is good news [good news = Gospel] and the good news is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ!

In Romans 3:22 the bible says, "righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe."  And the Bible says in Romans 10:9, "That if you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."  Salvation is free to those who believe!  That is truly good news!
